2016 Dean’s Excellence Award Winners Named

Dean's Excellence Awards - Financial Management Association

Congratulations to the winners of the 2016 Dean’s Excellence Awards, which recognize and encourage the continued development of a unique culture at the UCF College of Business Administration that promotes engagement, risk-taking and innovation. The awards were presented by Dean Paul Jarley at a breakfast ceremony Friday morning at the College. (View a selection of photos from the event here.)

The following three awards were voted on by the Student Ambassadors:

  • Excellence in Faculty-Student Engagement, which recognizes the professor who does the most to foster engagement in the classroom and build a strong rapport with students outside the classroom, was awarded to Lonny Butcher.
  • Excellence in Student Organization Engagement, which recognizes the student organization that does the most to encourage student-faculty interaction, was awarded to the Financial Management Association.
  • Most Engaged Student Organization Faculty Advisor recognizes the registered student organization faculty advisor whose efforts helped the RSO reach significant accomplishments, achievements and/or national recognition. This year’s award went to Dr. Carolyn Massiah.

The following awards were selected by the Dean’s Advisory Board:

  • Most Transformative Moment highlights a one-on-one conversation between a professor and a student that changed the student’s perspective on a topic or the course of their life in some way. This year the award went to Dr. Dean Cleavenger.
  • Student Shakera Quince who led a resource drive for the non-profit organization Mustard Seed earned the award for Excellence in Student Risk-Taking, which is based on a student project submitted by the faculty member and it was awarded to for leading.
  • Excellence in Contributions to the Community recognizes the faculty member who has done the most pro-bono work (using their professional expertise) in the community.  This year the award went to Leslie Connell.

The next two awards were selected by the College Executive Committee (CEC):

  • For his work with the UCF Foundation and Dr. Phillips Charities Investment Committees, Dr. Paul Gregg took home the award for Best Chair of a College Committee, which recognizes the college committee chair whose committee did the most significant work during the year.
  • Gordon Hasse won the award for Excellence in Faculty Risk-Taking for his initiative in arranging for a real student-client interaction in his Integrated Marketing Communications. This award honors a faculty member engaging in a high-risk venture with considerable potential and is judged on the inherent risk in the project, the potential for long-term payoff and the competence with which the project was launched.

The next three awards recognize staff achievements:

  • The Most Transformative Moment (Staff) is based on a conversation between a staff member and a student that changed the student’s perspective on a topic or the course of their life in some way. This year the Most Transformative Moment went to Career Coach Sara Garcia.
  • Holly Bouma took home the Innovation Award for her innovative and passionate work in creating the Study Abroad Program.
  • The Professional Growth Award, which recognizes the staff member who best exemplifies getting out of their comfort zone, accepting a new professional challenge and rising to the occasion, was awarded to Angelika Carroll for her efforts as office manager of the new Integrated Business program.

And finally:

  • The Spirit of the College Award went to Dr. Keith Harrison whose enthusiasm and energy inspire all those he meets.
  • The winners of the Social Media Campaign Contest, which recognized the student organizations that generated the most social media traffic using #UCFBUSINESS, were Collegiate DECA, FMA and Phi Beta Lambda.
